The Alexa ranking system gets a facelift


Yesterday saw the Alexa ranking algorithm get a facelift, and saw many of the biggest sites like SlashDot that traditionally got an underrated Alexa rank actually improved, on the flip side the Alexa rank for many popular Internet Marketing and Make Money online blogs such as JohnChow.com Problogger.net and ShoeMoney.com actually decreased. The reason for such a dramatic change in the Alexa rank of many sites get down to how Alexa previously derived its ranking information and how it is now derived, previously the Alexa rank was calculated from statistics generated from the Alexa toolbar, now Alexa have confirmed they are obtaining internet usage stats from multiple sources, to provide a better more even picture of internet usage patterns. You can read what Alexa have to say about their new ranking system on their blog post titled The Alexa Ranking system has been changed I say this correction was long sought after, the Alexa rank was always known as being unreliable giving an un-fair advantage to sites frequented by users that had the Alexa toolbar installed, which was basically the entire internet marketing, make money online, and web development community.
